Landsborough Railway Station

Landsborough is a railway station on the Nambour and Gympie North Line of the Queensland Rail City rail network, in the northern part of South East Queensland; it is also a stop for many state-wide rail services. Located near the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, it falls within Zone 13 of the TransLink integrated public transport system. It is also where QR's Flagship Electric Tilt Train stops at this station.

History

In 2006, as a response to the rapidly growing area around Landsborough station, the Queensland Government announced that it would be radically upgrading the station, with the "north coast" region expected to grow by 150,000 by 2016. The A$2.4m (US$2.2m, £1.33m) renovation was completed in late 2007, and included the building of new facilities, including new platforms, rainwater tanks, shelters, lighting, and toilets; a new cark park was also built. These upgrades are part of a A$275m overhaul of the Caboolture-Landsborough corridor, which includes realigning and duplicating tracks, as well as providing sidings for increased reliability and punctuality. However, only the first phase of this project has been completed (between Caboolture and Beerburrum).

The station has one of the few remaining examples of World War II reinforced-concrete air raid shelters in Queensland. Landsborough was a regular stopping point for refreshments for the troop trains.

Location

Landsborough station is located in the town of the same name, from the Brisbane central business district by rail. More importantly, it is the station closest to the major Sunshine Coast centres of Caloundra, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, as much of the Sunshine Coast lacks any rail access. In order to address this, the Maroochydore Line is currently planned, with several works on the Nambour and Gympie North Line taking place in preparation.
